Hon. Eng. Eric Murithi Muga, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Launches Strategic Plan 2023-2027 in Nairobi

              Nairobi, October 23, 2024
Hon. Eng. Eric Murithi Muga, EGH, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, today launched the Strategic Plan 2023-2027 at a high-profile event in Nairobi. The new plan aims to address the critical challenges of water harvesting and storage in Kenya, which have long hindered sustainable water management and supply.

In his keynote address, CS Muga emphasized the growing need for enhanced infrastructure, funding, and innovation to secure the country's water resources. He highlighted that inadequate water harvesting systems, coupled with the erratic effects of climate change, have strained water availability for both domestic and agricultural use.

The water harvesting and storage challenges we face are not just infrastructural but also financial. We must commit more resources and build resilient systems to ensure every Kenyan has access to safe and reliable water,” Muga stated. He called for collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners to tackle these challenges head-on.

Among the key priorities in the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan are:
Increased Funding: Muga urged both national and county governments to allocate more funds for water projects. He stressed that the sector requires significant investment to develop large-scale water reservoirs, small-scale rainwater harvesting systems, and irrigation schemes.

Infrastructure Development: The plan outlines the construction of new dams, rehabilitation of existing ones, and the expansion of water storage facilities across the country. This infrastructure will support water retention and minimize wastage during rainy seasons.

Community Engagement: CS Muga underscored the importance of involving communities in water management practices, calling for training programs to empower local communities in effective water conservation techniques.

The event was attended by key stakeholders from the government, international organizations, and private sector, all of whom expressed support for the strategic plan's goals.
Hon. Muga concluded his remarks with a call for unity and urgency, “Water is life, and we must act now to preserve it for future generations. This strategic plan is a roadmap to achieving water security in Kenya.”

The launch of the Strategic Plan 2023-2027 marks a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to mitigate the country’s water challenges and pave the way for sustainable water management practices.
