Nairobi, October 15, 2024 — The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) have called on the government to immediately implement the agreed salary increases under the Return to Work Formula (RTWF) signed on September 26, 2024. The unions are demanding that the government operationalize the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and ensure that basic monthly salaries rise by 7% and 10%, as per the agreement.
The unions emphasized that the agreed salary increments were to take effect starting July 1, 2023, with an automatic annual increment of 4% of the basic salary for two years of the CBA cycle. However, they claim that despite the agreement being signed, no action has been taken to implement these changes, leading to growing frustrations among university staff.
Speaking at a press briefing, the unions expressed concerns that political tension should not be used as an excuse for the government’s inaction. They urged the government to facilitate university councils to implement the new salary scales, as promised.
“The government must fast-track the operationalization of the RTWF and ensure the agreed-upon salary increments of 7% and 10% are reflected in the new pay structure,” a joint statement from UASU and KUSU leaders read.
They further called for an inter-ministerial committee to be convened immediately to finalize the remaining items of the CBA. The unions warned that failure to address their demands would force them to use "all available means" to ensure the full implementation of the RTWF and the 2021-2025 CBA.
UASU and KUSU have vowed to continue pushing for better working conditions for university staff, stating that the government must fulfill its commitments to maintain industrial harmony in the higher education sector.
