High-Level Stakeholder Engagement Conference Concludes with Resolutions to Strengthen Health Insurance in Kenya

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), in collaboration with the Social Health Authority (SHA), hosted the High-Level Stakeholder Engagement Conference under the theme "Strengthening Health Insurance for Sustainable Health Care Access." This critical forum brought together policymakers, healthcare providers, insurers, and other key stakeholders to address challenges and propose strategies to enhance Kenya's health insurance system.

  The conference featured in-depth discussions on four sub-themes:
Policy and Regulation, personnel Capacity training and research in health insurance management, expanding Health Care Access and digital Innovations.
The following key Resolutions were made:
  Policy and Regulation, participants emphasized the need for robust frameworks to align with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals. Commitments include:
  Reviewing and harmonizing health insurance policies to ensure accountability and compliance.
  Strengthening partnerships between government, professional bodies, and private sector stakeholders.
   Promoting inclusive policymaking that involves civil society and underserved communities.
  Personnel Capacity, recognizing skilled human resources as pivotal, the following actions were resolved: Enhancing health insurance management training at KMTC with industry-responsive programs, supporting continuous professional development for healthcare providers and insurance managers, then advancing research and innovation to inform policies and practices.
    Expanding Health Care Access, The Social Health Authority committed to ensuring equitable healthcare access by: Expanding coverage to rural and marginalized populations, addressing financial barriers through subsidy reviews for vulnerable groups, building public trust through timely payments, transparency, and accountability.
    Digital Innovations in Health Insurance. To streamline processes, stakeholders agreed to invest in digital platforms for efficient member registration and claims processing, strengthen data management systems for evidence-based decision-making, resolve technical challenges and improve interoperability of health systems.

   The participants urged government agencies, healthcare providers, insurers, and development partners to unite efforts in creating an inclusive, sustainable, and efficient health insurance ecosystem.

 This conference marks a milestone in Kenya's journey toward achieving universal health coverage, fostering collaboration, and ensuring sustainable health care access for all citizens.
