Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024: Cargele Masso Calls for Bold Action on Environmental Restoration and Sustainable Development

             November 6, 2024  Nairobi, Kenya

The Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024 conference in Nairobi concluded with a compelling call to action from Dr. Cargele Masso, Director of the Environment and Biodiversity Impact Platform, who emphasized the urgent need for multi-stakeholder efforts in environmental restoration and sustainable development across Kenya.

Addressing the participants of environmental leaders, community representatives, and policy makers, Dr. Masso detailed his platform’s mission to combat water pollution and soil degradation while supporting local stakeholders in restoring degraded landscapes. He outlined a vision for a future where communities actively protect and nurture their natural surroundings through practices like sustainable irrigation, afforestation, and agroforestry.

We are committed to empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to restore their lands, monitor water resources, and control sufficiency for future generations,” said Dr. Masso. “By involving local communities in restoration efforts, we aim not only to rebuild ecosystems but to reduce poverty and provide sustainable livelihoods.”

Dr. Masso highlighted several critical initiatives, including support for robust irrigation systems to address water scarcity, strategies for afforestation to combat deforestation, and agroforestry practices that integrate trees into farming systems. Such efforts, he noted, are essential for building climate resilience and supporting local agriculture while maintaining biodiversity.

Dr. Masso also emphasized that preventing human-wildlife conflicts is a vital component of sustainable land use. By restoring natural habitats and fostering coexistence, the platform seeks to minimize conflicts that arise when wildlife habitats are disrupted by human activities.
The day’s presentations reinforced the need for collaborative approaches to protect Kenya’s diverse ecosystems, including monitoring coastal and marine environments to ensure water sufficiency. Dr. Masso’s call for bold, coordinated action inspired participants, who agreed that achieving sustainable landscapes requires unified efforts from government, NGOs, communities, and the private sector.
As the Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024 conference concluded, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to driving meaningful change for Kenya’s landscapes, reducing poverty, and enhancing resilience through conservation efforts that place communities at the heart of environmental stewardship.
