Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024: Rockefeller Foundation Highlights Community-Led Solutions for Improved Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture
The Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024 conference in Nairobi showcased impactful solutions for sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and food security, with a powerful presentation by Kagwiria Koome, Manager at the Rockefeller Foundation. Koome outlined key initiatives aimed at improving quality of life in Kenya through community-centered and government-supported strategies.
In her address, Koome emphasized the Foundation's commitment to enhancing nutrition in schools by working closely with the Kenyan government to increase access to school feeding programs. This initiative aims to tackle child malnutrition, especially in underserved regions, by ensuring that students receive regular, nutritious meals that contribute to their academic and physical development.
"By collaborating with government agencies and local communities, we are making strides in combating food insecurity," Koome stated. "Our goal is to empower communities to sustain themselves through improved access to nutrition and healthier cooking methods.”
One of the foundation’s standout projects is promoting clean cooking solutions. Recognizing that many rural communities rely on traditional, polluting fuels, the Rockefeller Foundation is actively supporting the transition to cleaner cooking methods, which can improve health outcomes and reduce deforestation.
Koome also highlighted a shift toward climate-resilient crops and suitable farming practices. With climate change posing challenges to traditional agriculture, the Foundation is championing the cultivation of drought-resistant crops like sorghum, as well as encouraging farmers to transition from imported rice to locally grown varieties. This shift not only reduces reliance on imports but also builds local food security and resilience to climate impacts.
The day’s discussions underscored the need for continued partnerships and investment in sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and food security. The Rockefeller Foundation’s initiatives, presented by Koome, resonated strongly with participants, who saw them as a model for addressing Kenya's intertwined challenges of climate change, health, and nutrition.
As the Kenya Landscapes Actors' Platform 2024 conference concluded, the call for coordinated action among public and private sectors, NGOs, and local communities was louder than ever, with a clear focus on empowering communities to foster sustainable practices for a resilient future.
