A high-profile Regional Conference on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital, and Social Media in Elections was held in Nairobi, emphasizing the transformative potential of technology in enhancing electoral processes. The conference brought together key stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by technology in the electoral landscape.
The chief guest, Mr. Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management at the Executive Office of the President of Kenya, delivered a compelling keynote address. He highlighted the risks of failing to embrace technology in elections, including vulnerabilities to misinformation, reduced voter engagement, and inefficiencies in the electoral process. "Technology is no longer optional; it is the backbone of a credible and transparent electoral system," Owalo stated, urging stakeholders to invest in robust digital infrastructure.
The event also featured prominent guests, including Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, EGH, former Vice President of Kenya, who emphasized the importance of digital inclusivity and voter education in leveraging technology for democracy.
Mr. Marjan H. Marjan, Commission Secretary of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Kenya, provided insights into how the IEBC is adopting AI and digital tools to enhance transparency and efficiency in election management.
Dr. Ed Barnett, MBE, Deputy British High Commissioner to Kenya, highlighted the UK's commitment to supporting Kenya in embracing innovative solutions to strengthen democratic processes. "Collaboration is key to addressing the challenges and maximizing the benefits of technology in elections," he noted.
Mr. David Gosney from the US Embassy underscored the importance of safeguarding digital platforms against cyber threats and ensuring that AI and social media are used responsibly to promote free and fair elections.
