EPRA Calls for Increased Investment in Research and Innovation to Drive Universal Energy Access.

EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo                Bargoria

Nairobi, Kenya, 3rd June 2025

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has urged energy sector stakeholders to ramp up investments in research, innovation, and inclusive dialogue as key drivers of universal energy access and sustainable development.

The call was made during the opening of the 6th Annual EPRA Research and Innovation Conference 2025 at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi, where industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers gathered to explore solutions for Kenya’s energy future.

EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria emphasized the importance of evidence-based regulation in achieving Kenya’s energy goals.
As we gather this week, our collective focus must be on how we can harness research, innovation, and inclusive dialogue to help Kenya realize its ambition for affordable, clean, and reliable energy for all," said Kiptoo. “Energy access is more than just lights and power, it is about transforming lives, creating opportunities, and building resilient communities.”

The conference comes at a pivotal moment as Kenya nears 10 million electricity connections by the end of 2025, a major milestone in the country’s energy access journey. Currently, 81% of Kenya’s installed grid capacity comes from renewable energy sources, reflecting the nation’s commitment to a green energy transition.

EPRA has been instrumental in this progress through policy reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment facilitation, ensuring the sector remains on track to achieve universal energy access.

Under the theme “Energy Access,” the conference, running from 3rd to 5th June 2025, features: High-level policy discussions on energy affordability and sustainability, technical sessions on emerging innovations in renewables and smart grids, exhibitions showcasing cutting-edge energy technologies and knowledge-sharing forums to shape future energy policies.

Participants, including researchers, private sector players, and development partners, are expected to generate actionable insights that will guide Kenya’s energy sector strategies.

Kiptoo urged stakeholders to collaborate in accelerating energy access, particularly in underserved regions. “The journey to universal energy access requires bold investments, innovative solutions, and strong partnerships. Let us seize this opportunity to drive meaningful change.”

As Kenya continues to lead in renewable energy adoption, the conference serves as a crucial platform for unlocking new opportunities to power the nation’s sustainable growth.
