The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD),
we are set to celebrate our 50th anniversary with key stakeholders and partners on June 16, 2025. This momentous occasion will be held at the RCMRD headquarters in Nairobi Kasarani area, we commemorate five remarkable decades of leadership in geospatial technologies, Earth observation, and sustainable development across the African continent.

Building on the successful engagement with media representatives during the recent Media Breakfast Meeting, RCMRD now turns its attention to bringing together the broader community that has been instrumental in its journey. The golden jubilee celebration promises to be both a reflection on past achievements and a forward-looking dialogue about the future of geospatial science in Africa's development agenda.

Since its establishment in 1975, RCMRD has stood at the forefront of Africa's geospatial revolution, providing cutting-edge solutions that have transformed how nations manage their resources and plan for sustainable development. The organization has been pivotal in empowering member states with critical capabilities in natural resource mapping, disaster risk reduction, climate change monitoring, and urban planning. Through its innovative applications of satellite imagery, remote sensing, and geographic information systems, RCMRD has contributed significantly to food security, water resource management, and environmental conservation across the continent.

The June 16 2025 celebration will feature a rich program designed to honor these achievements while charting the course for future innovation. Attendees can look forward to high-level keynote addresses from distinguished guests, including government officials and international partners, who will reflect on RCMRD's impact and the evolving role of geospatial technologies in Africa's development. Interactive exhibitions will showcase landmark projects and technological advancements from the past five decades, offering visitors a hands-on experience of how spatial data has driven decision-making across various sectors.

A special segment of the event will highlight RCMRD's capacity-building legacy, recognizing the thousands of professionals trained through its programs who have gone on to become leaders in their respective fields. The celebration will also serve as a platform to announce new initiatives and partnerships that will define RCMRD's work in the coming years, particularly in areas of digital transformation and emerging technologies.

"We are not merely commemorating our history, but actively shaping our future," remarked the Mr Abednico Maphuru Director Geospatial Services. "This golden jubilee presents a unique opportunity to bring together all those who have been part of our journey - from government partners and development agencies to academic institutions and private sector collaborators. Together, we will celebrate our collective achievements and envision how geospatial technologies can continue to drive Africa's sustainable development in the decades ahead."

The celebration is expected to attract high-level participation from RCMRD's 20 member states, representatives from international organizations, development partners, academia, and leading players in the geospatial industry. The event will provide ample networking opportunities, allowing participants to explore new collaborations and discuss emerging trends in Earth observation and spatial data applications.
