Kenyan Government Approves Ksh. 165 Million for National Youth Council Elections.

NAIROBI, KENYA  July 23, 2025.

In a significant move for youth representation, the Kenyan Cabinet has approved Ksh. 165 million to fund the long-awaited National Youth Council (NYC) elections. The announcement, made yesterday by Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, H.E. Salim Munya (EGH), has been met with strong approval from youth advocacy groups.

The Youth Leaders’ Association, Kenya (YLA-K) swiftly issued a statement lauding the government's action. The association expressed "sincere appreciation" to President William Ruto's administration for expediting the budget allocation, which will be channeled through the State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy.

"This matter has been expedited, it demonstrates the government’s responsiveness and unwavering commitment to promoting youth inclusion, participation, and governance," stated Mbugua Wanyolke, Deputy National Chairperson of YLA-K, in the official release. The approval comes precisely one month after YLA-K submitted a formal request to the President's office on June 18th, urging action on the NYC elections.

The upcoming elections are mandated by the National Youth Council Act, 2009. This legislation stipulates that the NYC will comprise 16 elected youth representatives from across Kenya's 47 counties. These representatives are crucial for ensuring young people have a formal voice in national governance structures related to youth policy, advocacy, and development.

YLA-K emphasized its readiness to actively participate in the electoral process and committed to collaborating with government agencies to sensitize and mobilize youth nationwide. The association framed the election as both a "civic duty" and a "democratic right" for Kenyan youth.

"The trajectory of youth policy, advocacy, and development in the nation" hinges on this process, the YLA-K statement asserted. Wanyolke concluded with a rallying call. "We call upon all youth across the 47 counties to embrace this opportunity, organize meaningfully, and participate fully in electing credible, accountable, and visionary representatives to the NYC."

The approval of funds marks a critical step towards revitalizing the National Youth Council, providing a structured platform for Kenyan youth to engage directly in shaping policies and programs affecting their future. The specific timeline for the elections is expected to be announced by the State Department for Youth Affairs in the coming weeks.
