Kenyan Religious Leaders Issue Urgent Plea to "Stop Destroying Our Country" Amid Escalating Crisis.
NAIROBI, Kenya, July 9, 2025.
In a powerful intervention, Kenya’s Inter-Religious Council (IRCK) has demanded an immediate end to state-sponsored violence and political exploitation tearing the nation apart. Following a three-day emergency retreat in Nairobi, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu leaders issued a stark warning that the country is in a "very sad and dangerous state," blaming dominant political elites for fueling unprecedented tensions through their fight to "acquire, protect and consolidate power."
The council condemned the government’s handling of protests against the 2024 Finance Bill, accusing the state of degenerating legitimate discontent into "murderous chaos" marked by extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, abductions, and destruction of public property. It called on President William Ruto’s administration to prosecute senior officials linked to violence and financial scandals, insisting this is essential to restore public trust. Politicians were also urged to cease exploiting religion and ethnicity for mobilization, with strict adherence to the Constitution emphasized as the only path to a sustainable future.
Citing sacred texts including Psalms 72, the Quran (5:8), and the Mahabharata, the IRCK stressed that justice for the vulnerable is a divine imperative. It demanded an independent Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate all protest-related fatalities since June 2024 and challenged anti-corruption bodies to hold power-abusing officials accountable.
Positioning itself as a neutral mediator, the IRCK offered to facilitate dialogue between the government, youth movements, and other actors, invoking Isaiah 1:18: "Come, let us reason together." The leaders pleaded with Kenyans to prevent the nation from descending into anarchy, quoting the National Anthem’s call for unity and justice: "May we dwell in unity, peace and liberty, Plenty be found within our borders."
