A Party for the People, Sonko Secures Political Lifeline with NEDP Registration, Targets Nairobi Comeback.

NAIROBI, Tuesday  In a meticulously orchestrated move that formalizes his long-anticipated political resurgence, former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was this morning handed the legal instrument for his comeback: the certificate of registration for the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).

The ceremony at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) headquarters was rich with symbolism. Sonko, accompanied by a cadre of close allies and lawyers, received the Certificate of Full Registration from the Registrar, effectively transforming the NEDP from a concept into a fully authorized political entity with the power to sponsor candidates for presidential, gubernatorial, parliamentary, and county assembly seats.

Highly placed sources within the new party’s organizing committee confirm that while the NEDP will have a national presence, its primary and immediate battleground is Nairobi County. The party’s strategy is laser-focused on recapturing the governor’s seat and securing a supportive majority in the County Assembly in the 2027 General Election. This sets the stage for a dramatic confrontation in a city where Sonko’s flamboyant, hands-on style of governance and his controversial impeachment in 2020, left a deeply entrenched legacy.

“Nairobi is the heart of the nation, and it is bleeding,” Sonko stated in an exclusive interview following the registration. “The people feel abandoned by the current leadership. The NEDP is not just a party; it is a cry for help from the grassroots, a vehicle for direct service delivery that I championed.”

In a detailed manifesto outline shared with press, the NEDP is positioning itself as a populist, service-driven alternative. Sonko’s statement that it is “a party for the people by the people that speaks to the needs of the common mwananchi” is being operationalized into what insiders call the “Wananchi First” agenda. Preliminary pillars include:

  • Hyper-localized Development: Reviving and formalizing the infamous "Sonko Rescue Team" model into county-sanctioned rapid response units for garbage collection, drain unclogging, and emergency aid.

  • Informal Economy Empowerment: Promising structured support, licensing, and protection for hawkers, boda boda riders, and Jua Kali artisans, a key segment of Sonko’s political base.

  • Housing and Sanitation: A pledge to aggressively reignite stalled affordable housing projects and rehabilitate the city's public toilet facilities.

The party’s constitution mandates a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to elect its leadership. Plans are already underway for a major NDC in the first quarter of 2026, where Sonko will be formally installed as the party leader and presidential candidate. The period between now and then is designated for intense grassroots recruitment, ward-level office openings, and the identification of candidate “foot soldiers.”

Political analysts note the NEDP’s registration significantly alters the calculus for Nairobi’s 2027 race. “This is Sonko’s masterstroke to regain relevance on his own terms,” said Dr. Lorraine Akinyi, a political scientist at the University of Nairobi. “He doesn’t have to beg for a ticket from Azimio or Kenya Kwanza. He now owns the shop. This will force other parties to either compete fiercely for his former base or explore potential, though likely fragile, coalition arrangements with him. He becomes a kingmaker, at minimum, in Nairobi.”

The path is not without significant obstacles. Sonko’s impeached status and ongoing court cases remain a potent weapon for opponents. Further, building a disciplined county-wide party structure from the ground up will test his team’s organizational capacity beyond rally mobilization.

The reaction from his potential rivals was swift. A spokesperson for the current Nairobi County administration dismissed the NEDP as “a vehicle for personal redemption, not public service,” warning voters against “retrogressive politics.”

Nevertheless, with the certificate now physically in hand, Mike Mbuvi Sonko has sent an unequivocal message: his political obituary was premature. The race for Nairobi has officially begun, and the city’s most dramatic political figure has built his own lane to run in.

Kenya Dental Association Condemns KMPDC Over Alleged Misregulation of Dentistry.

The Kenya Dental Association (KDA ) has strongly condemned the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) over what it terms as misregulation and illegal handling of the dental profession. In a press release dated April 10, 2025, the KDA expressed deep outrage and disappointment following the publication of a new Scope of Practice for Dentistry by KMPDC, which the association claims is unlawful and dangerously undermines the quality of oral healthcare in the country. According to the KDA, the scope in question allows unqualified para-professionals to engage in dental procedures without appropriate curriculum-based training or the necessary competencies. The association accuses the KMPDC, under the leadership of its chairperson Prof. Stanley Khainga , of ignoring its mandate to ensure that Kenyans access the highest attainable standard of healthcare. KDA warns that this misstep poses a serious threat to patient safety and public health, potentially leading to ...
