Religious Leaders Convene at Ufungamano House to Address Kenya's Current State, Urge Unity and Integrity

Nairobi, October 16, 2024 – Key religious leaders from the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) gathered at Ufungamano House in Nairobi for a critical review of the state of the nation. The meeting, held under the theme of promoting peace and justice, highlighted growing concerns about Kenya's political, social, and economic trajectory as the country nears the 2027 General Election.

Citing the Holy Quran (An Nisaa 4:135), which calls for standing firmly for justice, the leaders warned that Kenya is veering in the wrong direction due to increasing political polarization and failures in key institutions. They expressed deep concerns about the growing ethnic mobilization by politicians, which they fear is laying the groundwork for divisive political activism ahead of the upcoming elections.

The religious leaders also condemned the ongoing delay in constituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), an essential body for ensuring a free and fair electoral process. "The failure to properly set up the IEBC undermines the integrity of our democracy and threatens to repeat past election challenges," said Rev. Dr. Elias Agola, Chairman of the NCCK

Rampant corruption, which continues to plague multiple sectors, was another major topic of discussion. The leaders highlighted the ongoing massive graft scandals that have left Kenyans disillusioned and heartbroken, particularly by Members of Parliament, whose actions have eroded public trust.

Rev. Dr. Elias Agola, stressed the need for Kenyans to remain peaceful and reject violence, even in the face of such adversities. "It is paramount that we, as a nation, choose peace over division. Let us hold our leaders accountable, but in a way that promotes unity, not destruction," he emphasized.

The meeting concluded with a joint call for integrity, justice, and solidarity as Kenya navigates these trying times. The religious leaders urged all citizens to be vigilant, remain peaceful, and hold firm to values that will ensure the country's future stability and prosperity.

According to the KDA, the scope in question allows unqualified para-professionals to engage in dental procedures without appropriate curriculum-based training or the necessary competencies. The association accuses the KMPDC, under the leadership of its chairperson Prof. Stanley Khainga , of ignoring its mandate to ensure that Kenyans access the highest attainable standard of healthcare. KDA warns that this misstep poses a serious threat to patient safety and public health, potentially leading to ...
