Supporting Market Access for Coffee Growers: A Path to a Sustainable Future

     Nairobi Kenya, November 22, 2024
In a landmark event aimed at transforming the coffee sector, farmers from key coffee-growing regions gathered for a special forum to explore strategies for sustainable market access and profitability. The event, held under the theme "Supporting Market Access for Coffee Growers for a Sustainable Future," was graced by Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi from the Department of Cooperatives.

Addressing the farmers, PS Kilemi emphasized the critical role coffee plays in the country's economy and livelihoods. He encouraged farmers to focus on coffee production as a major economic activity, urging them to increase the number of coffee bushes and maintain proper care to sustain their productivity.

"For coffee farming to remain profitable, we must ensure that bushes are maintained at optimal age and health. A vibrant coffee sector means improved incomes for our farmers and sustainable development for our country," Kilemi remarked.

The forum also provided a platform for experts to share insights on improving coffee quality and accessing international markets. Farmers were educated on the importance of adopting sustainable farming practices to meet global demand for high-quality, ethically-produced coffee.

Additionally, the PS reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting cooperatives in accessing financing, technology, and training. He highlighted ongoing initiatives to streamline the coffee value chain and ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce.

Participants expressed optimism about the future of coffee farming, with many pledging to implement the recommendations.

As the event concluded, stakeholders agreed that collaboration among farmers, cooperatives, and the government is essential for unlocking the full potential of the coffee industry. This commitment to sustainability and market access promises a brighter future for coffee growers and the agricultural sector as a whole.

The association accuses the KMPDC, under the leadership of its chairperson Prof. Stanley Khainga , of ignoring its mandate to ensure that Kenyans access the highest attainable standard of healthcare.
