DCP Party Welcomes Millicent Omanga as Gakuya Vows to Fix Nairobi’s Woes.

Nairobi, Kenya, by George Mutua.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) yesterday officially welcomed former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga into its ranks, in a colourful ceremony at the party’s headquarters that underscored the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The event, which drew a significant crowd of supporters from across Nairobi County, was led by DCP Party Leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Omanga, affectionately known as “Mama Miradi,” was received with full honours as she formally defected from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing unfulfilled promises by the current administration.

However, it was a fiery address by Hon. Gakuya James Mwangi, a distinguished member of the Parliament of Kenya, that stole the spotlight. Speaking to a charged audience, Gakuya took centre stage to highlight the myriad challenges facing the Nairobi City County government, pulling no punches as he outlined the struggles of city residents.

Gakuya detailed a catalogue of governance failures in the capital, focusing on what he termed the “disruption of livelihoods” through arbitrary demolitions and the infiltration of foreign traders into sectors traditionally reserved for local small-scale entrepreneurs. He expressed concern over the high cost of living and the lack of social welfare for vulnerable groups, including single mothers and widows, who he said had been hardest hit by recent county policies.

“Nairobi has been reduced to a theatre of pain for our people,” Gakuya declared, promising a new dawn for the city. He vowed that once elected, he would spearhead legislation to protect local traders and ensure that government contracts benefit Kenyans.

His sentiments were echoed by Gachagua, who, while welcoming Omanga, touched on the need to safeguard local businesses. The DCP leader vowed to ensure that foreign nationals are directed to the manufacturing sector rather than competing with Kenyan small-scale traders in the mitumba (second-hand clothes) and retail sectors.

In her address, a remorseful Omanga apologised to the people of Nairobi for her previous support of President William Ruto, admitting that the “wheelbarrow was not going anywhere.” She confirmed that she will be seeking the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in 2027 under the DCP ticket, promising to fight for gender equality and the restoration of key social services that have been scrapped.

The event signals a major boost for DCP as it seeks to position itself as a formidable force in Nairobi politics, with Gakuya and Omanga leading the charge to unseat the current leadership in City Hall

The Kenya Dental Association (KDA ) has strongly condemned the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) over what it terms as misregulation and illegal handling of the dental profession. In a press release dated April 10, 2025, the KDA expressed deep outrage and disappointment following the publication of a new Scope of Practice for Dentistry by KMPDC, which the association claims is unlawful and dangerously undermines the quality of oral healthcare in the country. According to the KDA, the scope in question allows unqualified para-professionals to engage in dental procedures without appropriate curriculum-based training or the necessary competencies. The association accuses the KMPDC, under the leadership of its chairperson Prof. Stanley Khainga , of ignoring its mandate to ensure that Kenyans access the highest attainable standard of healthcare. KDA warns that this misstep poses a serious threat to patient safety and public health, potentially leading to ...
